Senator Seeks Collaboration on Oversight of Device Advertising

Lawmaker suggests equal regulatory oversight be applied to medical device DTC advertising as to pharmaceuticals

The House and Senate should work together to ensure proper oversight of direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising for restricted medical devices, a lawmaker says.

In a letter to Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Senate Special Committee on Aging Chairman Herb Kohl (D-WI) suggests equal regulatory oversight be applied to medical device DTC advertising as to pharmaceuticals.

His letter follows a Senate oversight hearing on DTC advertising for restricted medical devices held last month in which medical experts testified that a significant number of device ads present unbalanced medical risk and benefit information.
